Case Tullo Part 2

Image
The second part of "Case Tullo", my Star Wars Fanfiction, is finished. This middle act has a lot more action than the first and has some difficult scenarios for our heroes. I hope you enjoy it! If you want to read the first part, see here:  (Case Tullo Part 1)

Dear Han: Thoughts on the "Star Wars" Franchise After "The Last Jedi"

Image
Han Solo - feel the pressure. I'm counting on you, bro.  The Last Jedi  has raised concerns for me that I hope the upcoming Solo film will provide clarity on. I need to know that Star Wars  is not destined to become nothing more than a platform for the Feminist agenda. My biggest complaint about The Last Jedi  is that not a single male character was shown as competent or worthy of admiration, whereas the female leads are shown in mostly positive ways. Finn was goof who had wrong priorities. Luke was a grumpy old man. You could argue that those two make sense. But then there's Poe Dameron. By far my favorite character in this movie, Poe does the right thing I believe, given the circumstances, and no one apologizes for keeping him in the dark despite his status as ranking squadron commander (what's left of it anyways). Holdo not telling Poe is a good move story-wise but only if you plan to set her up as egotistical and wrong-headed. If Leia had scolded...

Feedback appreciated as always!

Last Jedi Review and Star Wars Movie Rankings

Image
This post contains spoilers, and if you not seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi  yet why the heck are you reading a review, just go watch it and make your own judgment before reading my thoughts.  NOTE: I've updated this review and ranking after further reflection and conversions as of Feburary 22nd, 2018. Having now watched the newest installment of the Star Wars  saga three times and taken some time to let it stew in my mind, I feel ready to offer my thoughts and opinions on this movie and conclude with my updated rankings of all the live action films. I want to be as fair, nuanced and insightful as I can. The Last Jedi  is a difficult movie to evaluate because the pros and cons and so connected and so extreme that sorting it out is a mess. So what did I think? Here's my review thesis: The Last Jedi is by itself a decent movie but in the context of the Star Wars  saga timeline it is abysmal; there are three aspects of why this movie doesn't work: Fr...

About the High Ground...

Image
Few lines in the Star Wars  prequels are as simultaneously iconic and confusing as Obi-Wan Kenobi's declaration to Anakin in Revenge of the Sith  that "It's over...I have the high ground." Memes galore (including many of my own making) and endless jokes have their genesis in this line. But why did Obi-Wan say it? Was it simply more of George Lucas's infamously bad dialogue? Possibly, but I want to argue otherwise. I think this is best accomplished by first seeking to understand all the reasons Obi-Wan did not say it for. First, I don't think he expected Anakin to be like "Dang it! You got me bro!" and put down his lightsaber. Nor did he actually believe the slightly higher elevation granted some kind of special advantage. It might help but it is hardly decisvie in personal, hand to hand combat. Obi-Wan was a seasoned warrior and knew better than to believe the high ground was the trump card. So why did he make a big deal out of his elevati...

Sci Fi Movie Review: "Destination Moon"

Image
Sci-Fi Movie Review: Destination Moon (1950) Destination Moon holds a place among the Cinematic Sci-Fi Elite in terms of importance, a small cohort of films that includes Le Voyage dans la Lun  ( Trip to the Moon , 1902), Metropolis  (1927) and Star Wars  (1977). These films each ushered in a new era of cinematic science fiction. A Trip to the Moon  started the ball rolling with (at the time) dazzling special effects and creative filming methods. Metropolis  set the standard again with visuals and music, and of course, Star Wars  not only took visual effects and music to another level but began en masse  the concept of fandoms for a movie. What about Destination Moon  though? First, a little background. Destination Moon  was directed by George Pal and written by Robert A. Heinlein, one of the greatest sci-fi writers of all time. The story is both simple and (for Heinlein) unusually bland. But the movie triumphed because of the visu...
